Arfons set three Land Speed Records in his jet powered 'Green Monster' car in the 1960s, the fastest being 576. 553 mph in 1965. In 1966, when attempting to regain the record from his great rival Craig Breedlove, a wheel came off the car when travelling at over 600 mph. Arfons survived without serious injury, but never regained the record.
