Just a beautifully crafted

8 1/2" wide x 8 1/2 tall x 1 7/8" deep

but which someone long ago I assume filled with emergency first aid supplies

There's a bit of damage/irregularity to the wire mesh at the tip of the nose

The set, titled "District School" was created by Charles M. Crandall, a 19th century toy maker and inventor who worked in Pennsylvania and New York. Originally housed in a wooden box with paper label, the complete set included slatted bases that functioned as stands for the figures, both standing and seated. Those are missing from this one,
