The figures on either side are knights of the Garter. Originally built by William the Conqueror, Windsor Castle has been modified and extended by successive monarchs. It is shown here before its great transformation, which produced the castle we see today, undertaken by Jeffry Wyatville in the 1820s and 1830s during the reign of George IV.
